Dog Ordinance

The Town Clerk's Office acts as the issuing agent for dog licenses in the Town of West Seneca. Regulations are covered in both the Agriculture and Markets Law of the State of New York and Chapter 62 of the Code of the Town of West Seneca.

EVERY PERSON HARBORING OR KEEPING A DOG
OVER THE AGE OF FOUR MONTHS MUST OBTAIN A DOG LICENSE.

WHEN SHOULD A DOG BE LICENSED?
Dogs must be licensed in West Seneca when the dog reaches four months of age. Rabies vaccination may be administered after the puppy reaches three months of age. NYS law provides one month to allow the owner to have their animal vaccinated prior to licensing.

WHERE?
Application is made at the Town Clerk's Office.

WHAT'S NEEDED?

  • In the case of a spayed or neutered dog, a certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian showing that the dog has been spayed or neutered, unless the certification is on file.

  • Certificate of rabies vaccination, or a certificate by a licensed veterinarian stating why the life of the dog would be endangered by the vaccine.

  • In the case of a guide dog, hearing dog, war dog, police work dog, therapy dog, or service dog, satisfactory proof that the dog is in fact used for that purpose.

HOW MUCH?
The statutory fee is:

  • SPAYED / NEUTERED  $ 11.00 **
  • UNSPAYED / UNNEUTERED  $ 18.00 **

** Note:  Senior citizens (age 65 or older) receive a $7.50 discount on dog licenses.

WHERE DOES THE FEE GO?
The fee collected for dog licenses is used for the controlling of dogs and maintenance of West Seneca's animal shelter.

LEASH LAW
The Town of West Seneca requires dog owners to keep their pets under restraint at all times. Running at large is prohibited. Any dog found running loose or at large is subject to seisure.
Pursuant to the Dog Ordinance for the Town of West Seneca, fees are imposed upon the dog owner for the costs of seizure and impounding.

"POOPER SCOOPER" LAW
Taking your dog for a walk? The Town of West Seneca adopted legislation in 1994 requiring pet owners to clean up after their dogs or face a fine.

NOISE ORDINANCE
West Seneca has a noise ordinance effective between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., which covers excessive barking or other noises created by animals under the control, custody or ownership of a person at any time or place so as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in any office, factory or any dwelling or any type of residence, or of any person in the vicinity.

HARBORING WILD OR EXOTIC ANIMALS
All persons are required to report the owning, possessing or harboring of a wild or exotic animal under General Municipal Law 209-cc shall report to the Town Clerk on or before April 1st, of each year.
