Mission Statement

The mission of the West Seneca Senior Citizens Center is to promote healthy aging, independence and the well-being of older adults through health, wellness, educational, cultural, and recreational programs and services.  We promote good fellowship in a friendly and relaxed manner that best serves residents of Erie County ages 50+.

Vision

Today’s active older adults are redefining quality of life and healthy aging. The West Seneca Senior Citizens Center will continue to be the focal point for area older adults who participate in our activities to engage with each other, meet new people, acquire new skills, and have fun!  In addition, our offerings support senior's independence, provide them with a sense of purpose and the opportunity for seniors to help seniors and promote intergenerational relationships.

Anyone who enters the West Seneca Senior Center is expected to adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Membership

The West Seneca Senior Center is open to all Erie County residents age 50+.  You do not need to be a resident of West Seneca to join or to visit the Center as many of our services are provided through Erie County.  (Please note, the Erie County programs we participate in have a minimum age requirement of 60+, but many are still available to younger seniors, just at a higher requested donation).  You may visit the Center as often as you like and participate in as many activities as you wish that interest you. If you choose to become a member, there are many benefits and attending the Center regularly keeps you apprised of all events and classes we have to offer.  Members receive priority registration at our events and classes (ex. Safe Driving Classes; Dinner Dance Tickets; Special Luncheons, Parties, and Celebrations; etc.).  There is no fee to join, just simply complete the membership form, visit us regularly, and start enjoying all the benefits!

Lunch We serve lunch Monday-Friday at 12:00.  Please arrive between 11:15-11:45 to sign-in before we serve.  To order weekly frozen meals to be picked up each Monday, please call the office on week in advance (716) 675-9288.  If you need meals delivered, please call NYConnects at (716) 858-8526.
Going Places Van Service The Erie County Going Places Van service will pick up any resident in West Seneca and take them anywhere in Erie County (medical are given priority).  Please call (716) 858-7433 for assistance.

Game Room

In addition to the organized activities listed above, we have a game room featuring a 9' pool table, shuffelboard, chess, board games, puzzles, and card tables that may be reserved for your group to play.  Current members of the West Seneca Senior Center are given priority in making reservations.

FeedMore WNY Farm Market Truck Tuesdays 10:00-11:00 Starting 5/2 and every Tuesday from 10:00-11:00am the FeedMore WNY Farm market Truck is coming to the WSSC! Stop by to purchase fresh, healthy, affordable and locally grown produce!  The Farm Market accepts credit, debit, cash, SNAP, and Double Up Bucks!

Free Tax Prep Offered by AARP AARP is offering free tax prep for basic filing.   You must an appointment with our Office by calling (716) 675-9288 or stopping in during office hours M-F. Please note, there is a packet that must be picked up in-person in our lobby. The completed packet & all documentation must be brought with you the day of your appointment. If anything is missing, you will be required to leave & make another appointment. There is no ability to print or go online to access documentation at the Senior Center. You must be fully prepared when you arrive for your scheduled appointment.

3/7  10:00-3:00 HEAP Representatives will be here to assist with your energy cost needs.  Just stop in!

3/7  11:00   Identity Theft Workshop presented by Brittany Kashino & Tony Ando, M&T Bank. Part of the no cost financial wellness classes and M&Ts Financial Education Center.  Providing access to information on a variety of topics

3/12 Chair Massage  9:00-12:00 $1.00/minute. You must pay when reserving your spot. If you cancel, you will not be refunded. Provided by West Seneca LMT Maralyn Johnson from 290 Center Rd. Reserve your preferred amount of time at the Office Desk.

3/26 Lifespan Financial Management Assistance Program The Center for Elder Law & Justice has a new partnership with Lifespan, which will provide free financial management and legal services to support seniors in the community. This program seeks to link volunteers with seniors who need help with budgeting, bill paying, managing debt, and other financial wellness services. To attend, you must reserve your seat with the office.

3/28 Spring Learning Sessions: 1:00 All About Composting & 2:00 Gardening Is for the Birds! Are you curious about composting? Have you seen the composting bins at the  West Seneca Farmers Market?  Do you garden & want to learn how to attract birds to your sanctuary?  Come learn from the Farmer Pirates Composting & Master Gardener, Pati Aine Guzinski.

4/1 1:00 Annual Talent Show. Come participate in our Annual Talent Show & show off your best singing, dancing, magic, juggling, comedy, etc.  To enter your act, you musty register at the Office Desk.  It is free to participate.  We will invite guest judges & prizes will be awarded for top 3 overall performances.

4/4 11:00 Parkinson’s Education Session. Presented by Nancy Nealon, LMSW, Senior Education & Outreach Manager, Parkinson’s Foundation.

Safe Driver Academy 3/20 9:00-3:00 Doors to the Center open at 8:45am. Cost is $35/person paid in cash or check to the instructor. This is a service provided to our active members...it pays to become a member of the WSSC!

Monthly Medicare Insurance Representatives are here to help! Each month representatives visit our Senior Center to answer your questions.  Lobby Just stop in: 3/7 Highmark BCBS 9:00-12:00; 3/12 United 12:30-2:30.

 

Art Classes

Art Society. The WSSC has a long standing relationship with the Art Society who displays their artwork throughout the year & hosts their semi-annual Art Show in our Main Ballroom.  Classes are free as Cindy donates her time & the Center purchases the supplies. Please note, you MUST have a reservation ticket for entry into the Art classes.  Reserve your seat & pick up your ticket at the Office Desk.

Watercolor Painting Classes 2/8 & 2/22 1:00 Space is limited to 30 participants.

Greeting Card Design 2/15 1:00 You must sign up at the Office Desk in the Lobby to ensure there are enough supplies.  Come create greeting cards for various occasions.  Each month we will focus on 1-2 card designs.

Defensive Driver Safety Classes

Please note, WSSC members have first priority to our classes, so join today to take advantage of our member benefits!

Safe Driver Academy: This class is a benefit to WSSC active members (you are an active member if you attend the Center at regularly).  Class will be held on a  Thursday once each month (see Events above). Class runs from 9:00AM-3:30PM. $35.00 cash or check paid the day of the class (made out to Safe Driver Academy).  You must bring your own lunch or you may participate in the Center's lunch program by reserving your meal a minimum of 1 week ahead of time (cost is a $3.00 suggested donation).  Certificate of completion is accepted by ALL insurance companies. To verify, click here: https://www.myimprov.com/defensive-driving/new-york/

Erie County Programs at the WSSC

Going Places Van

In cooperation with the Erie County Department of Senior Services, the town operates a van to pick up Senior Citizens (who cannot use, or do not have access to any conventional means of transportation) at their home and take them to the doctor, food shopping and other necessary services. The suggested donation for a one-way trip is $3.00, but each person determines what he or she can pay. The van operates five days a week (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments must be made 24 hours in advance by calling (716) 858-7433. For information regarding Wheelchair Van Service, please call the Living Center of Western New York at (716) 836-0822.

Nutrition

In cooperation with the Erie County Department of Senior Citizens, the town provides a hot meal for people age 60 or over and their spouses each weekday (except holidays) at 12:30 p.m. at the Center. The new suggested contribution for each meal is $3.00 (price effective 01/01/2013). Please call the Center at (716) 675-9288, Monday and Tuesday 9-3pm; to make reservations for lunch 1 week after.

R.S.V.P.

Our Seniors participate in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in cooperation with the Erie County Department of Senior Services. Currently, the Nutrition Program volunteers and the Monday Morning Sewing Group are R.S.V.P. affiliated. The Sewing Group makes lap robes for veteran's hospital patients and residents of area nursing homes. For more information and/or assignments, call the R.S.V.P. Office at (716) 858-7548.
